Road closures around the Museum – Saturday 6 July

This Saturday 6 July, approach the Fitzwilliam without cars on the road – as people would have done back in 1848 when the Museum opened.

Extinction Rebellion Cambridge have advised they are planning a protest event “Streets for Life: Imagine Cambridge without Cars” and intend to create a series of road blocks to prevent vehicle access to the Grand Arcade multi storey car park and to free up adjoining streets for carnival activities. Affected areas are Regent Street, Trumpington Street and Tennis Court Road. View the street plan.

As a result, significant traffic disruption and congestion are expected, and although City Council car parks will be open, it is advised to avoid driving into the city centre and to use alternative forms of transport, where possible, such as park and ride, cycling or walking.

Big Weekend activities on Parkers Piece will not be affected, where you can find our University of Cambridge Museums team and join them for hands-on activities inspired by our collections and pick up our action-packed Summer at the Museums programme for families.

The Museum remains open as usual from 10.00 – 17.00, and in the afternoon we invite families to drop-in and join us for our Family First Saturday (14.00 – 16.00) with activities and art-making on the theme of caring for our Museum.

On Sunday 7 July, Cambridge is hosting the Race for Life 5k.

This year, the route does not come past the Museum, and Trumpington Street will open, but there will be road closures in surrounding areas and significant traffic disruption and congestion can be expected.
