Gallery 1
Interiors
Arranged by themes of ‘Identity’, ‘Interiors’, ‘Nature’ and more, our newly refurbished galleries bring together our much-loved and iconic artworks alongside brand-new acquisitions – many of which are now displayed for the very first time. Explore galleries 1–5 and discover the surprising connections between historic, modern and contemporary paintings.
Rooms are the backdrop to much of our lives and yet before the 1600s, everyday spaces were rarely the subject of painting. From the family home of the 1700s to rented rooms of modern metropolises, discover what happened when artists like Walter Sickert, Paul Cezanne and Ethel Walker began to retreat inside.
Make sure not to miss our ‘Women Reading’ wall and explore how paintings of women reading chart the changes in women’s rights, education and intellectual freedoms.
*Please note the Commode by Thomas Jeckyll and William Holland and Sons has been temporarily removed for conservation.
